Hydrological Insurance Assessments – Extreme Weather Events

Flooding due to Extreme Weather Events
Overview

Rain Consulting was engaged in the national response to the 2022 and 2023 flood events, providing high-quality hydrological assessments for insurance claims across six states: New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, Tasmania, Victoria and Western Australia.

The scale of the events required swift mobilisation, effective coordination of personnel and subcontractors, and the delivery of consistent, defensible flood causation (hydrological) assessments.

Above & Beyond Strategies

Insurers required rapid, reliable, and accurate hydrological assessments following severe flooding in eastern Australia from late 2022 to 2023.

The challenge was to scale operations quickly, handle numerous assessments simultaneously, and uphold quality and confidentiality standards within tight deadlines.

Clear and compassionate communication with insured parties was crucial, alongside secure data handling to protect confidentiality at all times.

Thinking in Action

Rain delivered the following solutions.

  • Mobilised experienced hydrologists and engineers rapidly across all states.
  • Delivered site-specific hydrological assessments for residential, commercial and industrial claims.
  • Maintained internal peer review of all reports by Principal Engineers.
  • Integrated site inspection findings, local data analysis, and mapping into each assessment.
  • Supported claims in areas with little to no existing flood data using terrain analysis and local records.
  • Coordinated a national team of subcontracted hydrologists, all briefed under standard quality and safety protocols.
  • Maintained full compliance with confidentiality, OH&S and data handling requirements.
Outcomes
  • Timely, defendable flood assessments that helped expedite insurance claim outcomes.
  • Assisted in clearing the backlog of claims faced by the insurance industry due to multiple flood events and the volume of claims raised.
  • Coordinated response and rapid scaling with our network of trusted subcontractors around the country.
